Questions & Answers

Everything you need to know about learning a language through handwritten correspondence.

The Service

Inkwell connects language learners with native-speaking pen pals for handwritten letter exchange. Each month you receive a handwritten letter in your target language, along with a typed transcription and vocabulary notes — then you write back. It’s slow, intentional language learning built around real human connection.
Apps gamify language learning into short daily drills. Inkwell is about deep, meaningful practice — crafting and reading real letters, building an authentic relationship, and engaging with authentic written language at a pace that lets it actually sink in. Many members use both: apps for vocabulary drilling, Inkwell for real-world fluency.
Correspondents are vetted native speakers who are passionate about their language and culture. We hand-match each learner with a correspondent whose interests, age, and communication style align with yours. Every correspondent goes through a written application and sample letter review before joining.
We currently offer Italian, French, and English. We are actively expanding — Spanish, German, and Japanese are in the pipeline. Join the waitlist on the onboarding page to be notified when your language launches.
Your home address is never shared directly with your correspondent — letters are routed through our postal handling. Your personal data is stored securely and never sold. You can read our full Privacy Policy for details. Correspondents are identity-verified and must agree to our community standards.

The Letters

Every letter comes with: (1) the original handwritten page, (2) a typed transcription so you never feel stuck on handwriting, (3) inline vocabulary notes for tricky words or idioms, and (4) a brief cultural note when relevant. On higher plans you also get audio recordings of the letter read aloud by your correspondent.
Yes — that’s half the magic. Handwriting forces you to slow down, choose words deliberately, and feel the language in a way typing never does. Don’t worry about imperfect handwriting; your correspondent will appreciate the effort. We provide optional writing prompts on the Immersive plan to help you get started.
Every letter includes a typed transcription, so you always have a clean version to read alongside the original. If you’re still stuck, you can email our team and we’ll clarify any passages within 48 hours.
Absolutely. Good chemistry makes a big difference in motivation. Email us after your first exchange and we’ll rematch you — no questions asked, no extra charge. We want you to look forward to every letter.
Completely open — letters are yours to shape. Most pairs develop natural recurring themes (books, food, travel, daily life). On the Immersive plan you’ll receive optional monthly prompts if you want direction, but they’re never required.

Plans & Pricing

The Correspondent plan is perfect for beginners — one letter per month gives you time to read carefully, craft a thoughtful reply, and not feel overwhelmed. As your confidence grows you can upgrade to Pen Pal (two letters/month) or Immersive (weekly letters + speaking practice).
Yes. You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at any time from your dashboard. Cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period — you keep access and letters through that date. We don’t do lock-in contracts.
We don’t offer a free trial at the moment, but we do offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee: if you’re not happy after your first exchange, contact us and we’ll issue a full refund, no hassle.
Digital Dispatch is a standalone monthly newsletter written by native-speaking contributors. Each issue includes a long-form essay, seasonal vocabulary, a cultural deep-dive, and a short fiction piece — all in your target language, with a bilingual glossary. It’s great supplementary reading even if you’re not on a correspondence plan.
Annual billing saves you 21% compared to monthly. We don’t offer a specific student discount at this time, but keep an eye on our newsletter — we run seasonal promotions. You can also save 7% on quarterly and 14% on bi-annual billing.

Delivery & Logistics

International post typically takes 7–14 days depending on your country. We send letters in the first week of each month (or bi-weekly / weekly on higher plans). You can track the expected delivery window in your dashboard. Delays due to postal services are rare but can happen — we’ll always notify you.
Yes — we ship to over 50 countries. Postage is included in your plan price. If you live in a country with restricted postal access, reach out and we’ll see what we can arrange.
If a letter doesn’t arrive within 21 days we’ll have your correspondent rewrite and resend it, or issue a credit toward your next month — whichever you prefer. We keep digital scans of all outgoing letters for exactly this reason.
Outgoing letters are dispatched in the first 5 business days of each month. When you first subscribe, your correspondent will write within 10 business days of your sign-up date, so you won’t have to wait until the following month cycle.

Learning & Progress

Most members notice a meaningful improvement in reading comprehension and writing confidence within 3–4 months of consistent exchange. Progress depends on your current level and how actively you engage with each letter — re-reading, looking up words, and writing thoughtful replies accelerates results significantly.
Yes, with a caveat: you should have at least A2 level (basic phrases, simple sentences) to get meaningful value from reading and writing letters. If you’re a true zero-beginner, we recommend a month or two of app-based basics first, then jump in. Our correspondents are patient and adapt their writing to your level.
It’s a powerful complement rather than a direct replacement. Classes and apps build vocabulary and grammar rules; Inkwell builds fluency, cultural intuition, and the confidence to express yourself authentically. Many of our most engaged members use Inkwell alongside a class or tutor for the best of both worlds.
On the Pen Pal and Immersive plans, correspondents provide light grammar feedback on your outgoing letters — noting recurring errors with a brief explanation, without rewriting your words. On the Correspondent plan, the focus is on natural conversation; you can request occasional feedback by asking your correspondent directly.
The Immersive plan includes one monthly 30-minute video call with your correspondent for spoken practice. This is separate from the letter exchange and is entirely optional — some members prefer to keep things written, and that’s perfectly fine.
